Ever wonder which cities are the most environmentally conscious? According to grist.com, here’s the list:

1. Reykjavik, Iceland

  • Uses hydrogen buses on its streets
  • Uses geothermal and hydropower resources
  • Cleanest city in Europe
2. Portland, Oregon, U.S.
  • First U.S. city to enact a comprehensive plan to reduce CO2 emissions 
  • Aggressively pushed green building initiatives
  • Uses light rail buses
  • Has 92k acres of green space & more than 74 miles of hiking, running, and biking trails
3. Curitiba, Brazil
  • 75% of its residents rely on public transport
  • Has over 580 square feet of green space per inhabitant
  • It’s municipal park has a flock of over 30 lawn trimming sheep
4. Malmo, Sweden
  • Extensive parks & green space
  • Sweden’s 3rd largest city 
  • Using innovative design & currently planning to become more socially, environmentally, and economically responsive
5. Vancouver, Canada
  • 90% of its power comes from renewable sources: hydroelectric power (uses wind, solar, wave, and tidal energy)
  • Metro area has 200 parks and over 18 miles of waterfront 
  • Developed a 100 year plan for sustainability
6. Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Efficient public transportation
  • Won European Environmental Management Award for cleaning up public waterways and implementing holistic long-term environmental planning
7.  London, England
  • Mayor Ken Livingstone unveiled Climate Change Action Plan which entails: 25% of power is locally generate, more efficient sources, cut CO2 emission by 60% within next 20 years, over incentives to residents who improve the energy efficiency of their homes
  • Set stiff taxes on personal transportation
